Planning and executing a law enforcement funeral involves more than parking cars and seating people! There is much that needs to be considered in order to not only do it right, but to do it best.

Crisis-to-crisis management is not the philosophy best suited to responding to the death of an employee! Your agency members and their families deserve better.

Training is the key to ensuring that agency managers and personnel recognize and understand their roles and responsibilities when a death occurs. Our seminar can be a first step, but agencies must be committed to not only developing a comprehensive funeral protocol but also training to implement the protocol.

Once you're prepared to handle a LODD, you're also ready to deal with the death of an officer from any cause and also to help employees when they experience a death in their families. Law enforcement is adept at responding to a LODD because we're trained to respond to emergency situations. But this response is often centered around, and limited to, the logistical tasks and basic interpersonal issues, in addition to the demands of investigating.

Line-of-duty funerals are actually five funerals in one. The agency must provide one funeral for the surviving family, a second for the agency’s members, a third for the agency member’s families, a fourth for the community that the agency serves, and a fifth for the extended law enforcement community.

That's five groups of people, all impacted by the tragic death of an officer, all having needs that should be identified and, hopefully, met.

Attendees receive a comprehensive funeral planning book, course note-taking outline, resource list, and bereavement literature, over 350 pages of legitimate professional topic-related material. The PAF wants to ensure that attendees leave with more than just a few notes about the 40 plus topics covered during the seminar.

If the hosting agency desires, the seminar outline and course objectives may be submitted to the agency's POST certification or continuing education authorities prior to the seminar to secure CE credit for officers who attend. Certificates of Completion are given to all participants at the seminar's conclusion.

Agencies that host and/or attend seminars leave with the knowledge and extensive resource material that will permit them to respond properly and professionally to the death of an employee, especially in the line-of-duty.
